What is Mindfulness?

Simply put, mindfulness is the ability to be present in the moment, and to be aware of what you are doing without attachment or judgment. Living mindfully means that you are intentional and practice awareness. Mindfulness can also be viewed as the energy we generate when we are attuned with our mind and body, no matter what we are doing.

Actually, you already possess the ability to be mindful, and you may need to learn how to access these skills to incorporate mindfulness in your every day life. It’s also important to note that while mindfulness is often associated with, and has it’s roots in Buddhism, mindfulness itself is not a religion. You do not need to be a Buddhist to practice mindfulness. In fact, here are some ways you might already be practicing the art of staying in the present moment:

  • while driving
  • during prayer
  • engaging in contemplative practice
  • when paying attention to the other person in a conversation
